At first glance, the idea of a seven-year-old wielding a shot-gun is somewhat alarming.

But on the other hand, this isn’t a bunch of kids running around a playground packing heat – these are either children learning a sport – just like football, cricket, skiing, or badminton. Or archery, which I myself used to do in our back garden when I was seven. Or they’re children living on farms, where gun use is a standard tool of the job, like a plough or a tractor, learning how to carry out the family business.

Just because they have a firearms certificate, that doesn’t mean they keep a sawn-off in the toy cupboard next to the action man, rather they have access to a weapon which is constantly kept under lock and key when not in use, and when is being used it is done so completely under close adult supervision.

In short, these are children who are being brought up to have nothing but a healthy respect for firearms, to understand fully the implications and responsibilities of their use, and to understand that a gun is not a toy.

Compare that with 90% of other children, who grow up with toy guns to play with, who run around playgrounds shooting each other in games of cowboys and Indians, or cops and robbers. Or indeed sit in their bedroom in front of a screen laser-blasting the invading Ayleeyons, or their friends in networked Call of Duty. Objectively, which is actually worse?

The cornerstone of a liberal democracy is freedom, where legislation is only enacted to protect the public, and new legislation is only introduced in response to clear problems, and only then introduced in a considered manner after full weighing up of the pros and the cons.

So, alarming as a 12 year old having a firearms certificate might seem, in the absence of any problems having manifested as a result of it, what objectively is the problem?

An emergency notice has been served on an illegal gypsy camp, which was set up at the weekend on greenbelt land in Meriden. It is believed the travellers had purchased the plot of land from a landowner but did not have permission to build on the site.

Travellers bulldozing a field in a peaceful Solihull village to create a caravan site have been ordered to stop work by the authorities. Angry residents set up a road block with farming trucks stopping lorries taking building materials to the site.

This is not, as is often the case, travellers just moving onto a piece of common land and setting up, or even a case of them moving on to somebody else’s land without permission. This piece of land, they have legally bought.

Admittedly, they haven’t got planning permission to set up a camp on the land – intending instead to try to gain retrospective planning permission part way through the work. This is of course still illegal – but is a common practice carried out by big time developers and small time homeowners for their rear extensions alike. Overwhelmingly, when applied for, retrospective planning permission is granted.

But in this case, planning permission for the travellers’ site probably won’t be granted – even though it probably would have been for a block of nice little boxes on the hillside flats for rich people. And had it been flats for rich people, the people of Meriden almost certainly wouldn’t have turned out in force to block the road.

Why?

Because racism against travellers is the one remaining socially acceptable form of racism. Not only is it acceptable, it’s almost mandatory. Call somebody a nigger, wop, or paki and you’ll be quite rightly castigated for it. Call them a gypo or a pikey and your friends will laugh approvingly; take somebody to task for using the word gypo and they’ll tell you not to be so sensitive, that it’s Political Correctness Gone Mad(tm).

Now it’s true that many illegal traveller encampments need an awful lot of clearing up when they are eventually evicted. It’s also true that they shouldn’t move in illegally in the first place.

But if councils met their obligations to provide a certain number of travellers’ sites in the first place, there would be less of a problem of ‘illegal’ encampments. And ultimately, if you treat people like pariahs, then like pariahs they will behave.

So when can we see the end of this last socially acceptable form of racism?

It’s an obvious question, but how is the customer of the prostitute supposed to know whether they’re being pimped or have been trafficked into the country or not? Ask to see their tax return? Sign an affidavit or give a receipt afterwards?

More to the point, if the police know any given prostitute is in that criteria (to the extent they could prosecute the customer), oughtn’t they be taking action against the known pimps & traffickers themselves?

As the blurb about it says, this is a fundamental new approach to writing web browser software which takes into account the modern way people use the web; increasingly websites are not just glorified sales brochures, and indeed web 2.0 is much more than just blogs and social networking – on the modern web, people are actually doing stuff; many websites now are full-featured applications, computer programmes, which traditionally would have been stand-alone software sitting on the user’s own computer rather than on a remote server on the other side of the world. As Google explains, by fundamentally starting again from scratch in the way the browser is coded they hope to avoid many of the problems of stability and memory leak which besets complex web applications on current browsers.

On cursory glances, especially bearing in mind it has only just entered public beta and is labelled as version 0.2, it seems to be fine so far – it’s not crashed on me, all the sites I use are rendering fine, and I’ve not yet experienced the serious memory leak problem I usually have with Firefox.

Unfortunately, somebody has spotted something rather dodgy in the terms and conditions attached to downloading it and using it:

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

Which in a nutshell says, any content you post to a forum, blog, photosharing website, or whatever, you are granting Google a license to also re-use that content for its own purposes of saying how ace the Chrome product is.

As they say on the modern intertubes – Ts&Cs EPIC FAIL.

This is basically a ‘battle of the bands’ competition, but it turns out that each band on any given night (of six bands) has to sell at least 25 tickets at £6 in order to go through to the next round of the competition – so effectively the band has to cover £150 for each night they play a 20 minute set in; given many nights of the event there have reportedly barely been 25 people in the venue, let alone 150 people, it’s not hard to work out what might be going on – the bands have been having to stump up that cash themselves.

Now operating a pay-to-play is bad enough, but at least the bands have chosen those terms & conditions of their own free will – stoopid as they might be for doing so. But in what can only be described as a PR own goal, the operators of the Surface Unsigned Festival have sent a legal cease-&-desist take-down notice to the main blog for the creative industries in birmingham, Created in Birmingham, for criticising this practice, claiming copyright violation for reprinting the paragraph from the terms & conditions the bands had to sign containing the evidence of the policy.

Do we want this kind of behaviour from music promoters in Birmingham ?
