“MPs could be moved out of Parliament for up to three years while a major refit of the Commons takes place. Urgent work costing about £350m needs to be carried out on the historic central London building”.
Now, of course nobody sensible begrudges anybody who’s working environment has peeling paint and leaky taps being refurbished.
And equally, nobody with any sense of history and architecture actually begrudges the notion that a historic building should be maintained in keeping with the setting, and that sometimes to do that might cost money – Derry Irvine’s ‘DYI store’ gaffe aside.
But given the current economic climate, isn’t spending £250,000 on a feasibility study to work out where our MPs are going to have their little chats whilst their main office has a three-year-long £350,000,000 refurbishment a little…
…insensitive?
